"PIVOT" WHY WE CHANGED OUR NAME FROM BRAND BEE TO FORTY-NINTH STREET

Pivot, why we changed our name from brand bee hq to forty-ninth street, a blog written by bridgette karl, actress, website designer in NYC

Whether you are new around here or have been following along since I launched Brand Bee, WELCOME! I am glad you are here.

If you are a fan of the TV show FRIENDS you may be familiar with the episode where Ross + friends try to carry the couch up the very small New York City staircase and he screams "PIVOT!" That's what I'm referencing in the title but...

If you haven’t, it still stands true – we are pivoting! It’s nothing major, don’t fret. We are still offering the same products + services:

Custom Wix website design

Branding

Website templates

Photography

+ One-on-one Wix consultations

but we are definitely growing and pivoting seems like the right word to describe it.

THE BEGINNING

I came up with Brand Bee after I graduated college and was surfing the internet trying to figure out what I was going to do when I wasn’t on stage (or in this case, during the day while I was on a 4 month contract) I was so bored. I needed to fill my days!

Initially, it was going to be TheBrandBeeBlog.com – it was going to be a hub for everything I do (as Bridgette). I would link my actor website, a blog (that I’d learn how to start), health + fitness things...maybe virtual assistant services? I don’t know, the plan was to figure it out!

I decided on the name Brand Bee because I had recently been introduced to the concept of “branding yourself” as an actor. Since there are so many actors in the industry + you can’t be right for every single role (even though you could be *hair flip* #versatile) it's important to narrow in on your niche and brand yourself!

I was studying with a couple of voice teachers/coaches at the time and they were helping me build my audition book based on my brand and the roles I would truly be able to slay not just play.

I dove head first into the concept of “branding” and started implementing it in my everyday life as well as my career. Hence BRAND BEE! (I’m Bee – a good friend from high school called me that)

FAST FORWARD

Needless to say, I don’t want my business to be about me anymore. I want it to be bigger than myself. It has already expanded past what I thought this little side hustle would be + I’m hungry for more.

– I’ve discovered the world of website design

– I’ve delved into photography

– I am in love with branding/graphic design

– I can’t wait to start blogging!

I want to share what I know about website design, social media, acting, life, musical theatre, health, branding yourself and everything else I’ve learned along the way + I think a blog is a great way to go about that!

To put it plainly, I want to work + create something bigger than myself. I want to be able to bring on guest writers, contributors, build a team + reach a larger audience! Therefore, I felt we needed a name that was more objective and could grow with us.

WHY forty-ninth street?

49 is my favorite number + I love the orange brick that lines the subway station walls at the 49th street stop in Midtown Manhattan.

I can’t wait to get started on this journey! Leave a comment below if you’re excited or have questions/ideas! Please keep it positive. “Positivity promotes creativity!”
